Do not waste

Do not waste
The food on your plate
Never mind
It adds
To your obesity
Why not train
Them
To take
Less
On their plate

They can
Always take
A second helping

Children told
Not to waste
While brushing teeth
On the tap
Only
When you need

For a bath
Use a bucket
Do not shower
Do nat waste
Water

We feel good
We’re doing
Our bit

What about
The water
That flows
In the city
Into the drains into
The miniscule
Is harvested
Flows into wells
Or tanks
The rest
Wasted

Then in the mountains
The source oh the water
No tanks built
To contain it
So the water
Flows
Down the slopes
Into the sea
Leaving
The mountain
High and dry
And the people
High and dry
And the people
Parched

What about
The compounds
Made of concrete
Not letting
The water seep

How many buildings
Recharge
The water
How many
Let go
The drains
Overflowing
And flooding
The streets

A few
They have
Underground
Tanks
To store the water
That falls
On their terraces

The pretty plants
In the compound
In the little
Mud we have
Not yielding fruit
Or vegetable

Couldn’t we
Use that space
For ourselves
Our kitchen
Garden

They will steal
They will take
The fruit
Of our labour

Does it matter
Let someone
Eat
That’s what
My mother said
When she
Planted
Her papaya

The water flowing
From the overflow
Of the tank
Overhead
Watering It
In fertile mud

The watchmen
They are happy
To get
Organic fruit

Nature’s given
The fertile mud
The flowing water
She says
Do not waste
